3. PROPULSION SYSTEM
Your boat is equipped with a stern drive propulsion
system also known as an inboard-outboard engine
(Figure 2.3.2). This type of propulsion system has
the engine inside the boat secured to the hull’s
stringers at the rear end of the hull. The stern drive
unit, also called the lower unit because it hangs
below the hull, is part of the propulsion system that
attaches to the outside of the hull or transom. The
stern drive unit pivots to steer the boat.
